ECU - Faculty of Business and LawThe Faculty of Business and Law's Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre (SMERC) is setting off around the state to help small business owners think about the long-term survival of their business.

The community education program, Effective Business Exits, has been backed by funding from AusIndustry and support from CPA Australia.

The program aims to give WA small business operators the skills they need to develop and implement a succession plan, through a series of workshops in metropolitan and regional WA over the coming months.

Director of SMERC, Dr Beth Walker, said that more than 60 per cent of small business owners and up to 78 per cent of family business owners have no succession plan in place for their business.

“The high number of family-owned and operated businesses in WA's regional areas make the issue a particularly pressing one for the State,” said Dr Walker.
