Business Administration - School of Economic and Management Studies

Business Administration - School of Economic and Management StudiesBusiness Administration has a distinctive set of teaching and research interests. We believe that the most productive way of studying Business Administration is to take a critical perspective on what goes on in organisations, along with a thorough exploration of the 'nuts and bolts' of fundamental business skills and knowledge.

For this reason, our teaching and our research moves between the basic techniques and practices used in particular functions of management (such as accounting, marketing, human resource management) and a concern with understanding these techniques within their given historical and cultural contexts.

We believe that it is important to think about and debate not just technical issues, but also social trends, cultural context and ethical issues. We encourage students to critically engage with management practice grounded in a thorough appreciation of the mechanics of contemporary organisations. We try to foster creative and pragmatic thinking with the belief that business and organisational futures can only be realised by thinking through the wider issues raised by current practice.
