School of Business

School of Business The School of Business is pleased to have Jim Shaffer join us this fall as our new dean. Jim comes from a successful media career that spanned 30 years - taking him to Minneapolis, Baltimore, Buffalo, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Portland, Maine. In Los Angeles, he was Chief Financial Officer of the Los Angeles Times. He came to Maine in 1991 to be CEO of Maine-based Guy Gannett Communications, which had newspaper, TV and other media in seven states. After the sale of Guy Gannett in 1999, Jim spent the next few years in an entrepreneurial role as CEO of Clickshare Service Corp., an Internet startup that provides infrastructure for digital content transactions.

More recently, Jim is consulting and teaching in the field of adaptive leadership. He teaches leadership with Cambridge Leadership Associates, whose principals, Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky, teach at the Harvard University School of Government. Jim is active with Portland's Institute for Civic Leadership, whose mission is to build civic capacity by bringing together and training public, private, and non-profit leaders. His role at the USM School of Business is to help us to fulfill one of the cornerstones of our mission: developing leaders among our students. His key role is to infuse into the curriculum opportunities for students to exercise leadership. He will be team teaching the Getting Down to Business class with Jim Westfall and teaching.
