SMU Business
![]() Why major in business? Okay, so you want a credential to get a better job. That’s fine as far as it goes, but you will get a lot more than that from a business major. Paul Ehrlich, the Stanford University biologist who most of us regard as dean of the American environmentalist movement, put the intellectual case for a business major very well in his recent book on co-evolution of human biology and culture, entitled Human Natures (Penguin Books, 2000.) “One of the biggest driving forces of cultural evolution can trace its beginning back in prehistory with the genesis of trade. Trade led to markets, markets to money, and (scholars believe) writing. Markets, money, and literacy are together with their offspring, science and technology, primary shapers of our world and our natures.” And indeed, it was business entrepreneurs who in 15th and 16th centuries brought forth the printing press and the telescope, the two crucial innovations that made possible modern science, mass literacy, and indeed today’s system of higher education. So, if you really want to understand today’s world and how it got the way it is, and of its possible future directions, major in business. |
