The University of Wales (School of Management and Business)

Overview
A long-running MBA accredited by AMBA that emphasises employable managerial skills developed through workshops, case studies and sessions with experienced business practitioners. All teaching and learning activities are informed and reinforced by the extensive business research undertaken in the School of Management and Business. We recognise that you will want to take an MBA in order to equip you with the skills needed by high-flying managers and directors in a fast-moving global economy. We will do everything possible to equip you with these skills.

The Aber MBA
The Aber MBA has been running for 20 years. For the past five years, it has been accredited by the Association of MBAs and is the only MBA programme in Wales to have achieved this. The MBA is the flagship programme of the School. Class sizes are deliberately kept small, between 30 and 40 students each year. Within this number, small learning teams are developed that allow students to interact with lecturers and their cohort in a small-team environment.

This one-year full-time programme comprises 12 taught modules, followed by two managerial reports carried out over the final three months of the course. As well as the traditional subject areas that you will find on most MBAs, the Aber MBA focuses on the ‘softer’ approach to management and personal development. The importance of managerial skills to a manager is highlighted and integrated into the programme via workshops, case studies and guest speakers. There is also a strong emphasis on teamwork, and opportunities are provided for a residential weekend, where personal skills can be developed in a social and friendly environment.

The School has worked hard to establish a high degree of cultural diversity on the MBA programme. The 2004/05 cohort numbered 30 students coming from 14 different countries from all over the world. The average age is 29, with an average work experience of six years across a wide variety of sectors. Female students usually make up 40%–50% of the cohort.

We are well aware that the main motivator for students taking an MBA is career progression. We therefore provide one-to-one career guidance for all of our MBA students, if they ask for this, as well as subscribe to a number of recruitment consultants that highlight international job vacancies as they arise.

The University and study environment
The University of Wales, Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 and is the oldest university in Wales. Aberystwyth is a good-quality, traditional research-led institution set in glorious surroundings in a small university town. Being located in the countryside, the cost of living is also much lower than in the larger cities. The University has around 8,000 students and a strong tradition of welcoming students from all over the world.

Aberystwyth was recently ranked fourth among UK universities for its accommodation. International students are guaranteed university accommodation for the duration of their studies. The University is rich in high-quality resources that are open to students. The National Library of Wales (one of only five copyright libraries in the UK) is situated on our campus. The University has a fully equipped sports centre, an arts centre and numerous computer workstation facilities located around the campus.
